News from the Wild: Winter Survival for Animals & Plants
These Next Two Weeks
This week is honing in on the spectacular animal adaptations happening all around us during this time of year. Students will assess and compare how different animals use migration, hibernation, and adaptation to stay alive and thrive in the colder winter months. Special focus will be on winter birds and a seasonal favorite, reindeer.
Next week students will be studying surprising ways that plants adapt to their environment during these chilly winter months! Students will learn how to identify certain varieties of plants, such as perennials and conifers, and how the seasons affect their root systems and the very soil they need to survive.
Parent Tip
Well, after a remarkably warm November, Boise will begin to feel a consistent chill in the air this week! While this season often calls people indoors for rest and warmth, outdoor learning in the winter provides beautiful opportunities for growth. Your child’s teachers have been observing and encouraging self-management skills since the beginning of the school year, and winter is the season when that practice and preparation shows up as growing competence and mastery. The ability to integrate the sensory systems to achieve the goal of comfort in an environment that can feel decidedly uncomfortable is a tremendous skill!
If you are looking for family activities to enjoy as the winter season approaches, consider these opportunities:
Explore World Soil Day on December 5th. Soil health is a critical component of a healthy ecosystem, and there’s so many ways to dig in! Try planting seeds in various soil mediums from sand to gravel and see which plants grow best, go outside and plant a fruit tree in your yard (winter is the best time!), or create fun edible soil layers with ingredients in your pantry!
