News from the Wild: Spooky Season, Aquatic Friends & FUNDrive!
These Next Two Weeks
Spiders and owls and bats, oh my! EverWild students this week are studying spooktacular Halloween animals. We will look at why certain animals get a reputation for being spooky as well as why they are so important in our ecosystems! Don’t forget to join us for our Halloween event on October 30th, where you can search for some creepy creatures crafts hidden in the Enchanted Woods!
Next week students will be shifting gears into viewing life in the water. They will be able to identify and compare different common bodies of water, learn all about the state fish of Idaho, and discuss the adaptations macroinvertebrates have in order to live in our local aquatic environments.
Parent Tip
While we are early in the throes of celebrating Autumn, take it from me- don’t wait until it is too late to get your kiddo’s winter gear! As a fellow EverWild parent, I have to admit there have been times when I’ve waited too long to get those waterproof gloves or checked the sizing on last year’s snow bib, only to end up at Walmart the day before a very chilly forecast for Forest School. Those purchases quickly end up being stored as the backups, as they just don’t stand up well to how our kids play in the forest. If you need gear recommendations, check out the Family Handbook or head over to our blog, and if you find last year’s gear is too small, consider donating it to our Gear Library or to the FUNDrive!
Now, onto more current seasonal announcements: your child’s EverWild class will be welcoming the upcoming Halloween season in their own, unique way. If your child enjoys dressing up, they will likely ask to dress up for Forest School. Here’s a few fun ideas for dressing up, without sacrificing their Halloween costume.
🌙Offer 2 costumes this year- 1 for trick or treating and 1 for Forest School, with the latter possibly being a thrift store find or DIY.
🪄Find creative ways to use the sturdiest part of their costume, such as a mask, wand, or crown and pair it with color-coordinated clothing that can handle tree climbing and mud play.
🎃Offer for your kiddo to come to EverWild’s Enchanted Forest on October 30th in lieu of wearing a costume to class. This community celebration is a classic EverWild gathering, and it gives your child a chance to show off their costume to friends and teachers!
P.S.- Many of our classes will be learning about spooky animals, including bats, this week. Head over to https://www.plt.org/educator-tips/bat-week and find more resources to celebrate next week’s Bat Week!
